Course Description
Students continue to develop proficiency in al four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will interact with other students of Spanish, will gradually understand simple to more complex oral and written messages in Spanish and make simple to more complex oral and written presentations in Spanish. They learn to function in real-life situations using gradually a little more complex sentences and grammatical structures on a variety of topics, moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. They comprehend the main ideas of authentic materials that they read and listen to and are able to identify details. Spanish is used almost exclusively in the class as students develop the ability to communicate and discuss in a simple ways topics related to historical and contemporary events.
Performance level expected
I expect students coming with a Novice level of proficiency and the performance level expected of all Spanish II students by the end of the year in speaking and writing is Intermediate-Low, as established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL). This performance level designation means that students are able to use Spanish as a means of communication and self-expression rather than as a rote response in artificial drills.
Evaluation and grading
Spanish will be used as much as possible by the teacher as well as the students. The use of English is strictly limited. Grades will be determined according to the following criteria:
Test 25% Project 20 %
Quizzes 15% Homework 20 %
Class work/participation 20 %
Homework
It is necessary and a very important part of learning. Students should study, review notes and practice the new vocabulary even if homework is not assigned that day. Written homework is checked daily for completion and accuracy. All homework is to be completed before entering the classroom in order to receive full credit. One day late will receive 50% of credit, after that, a 0 is given for that assignment.
Make-Up Work
Any assignment, quiz or test missed due to illness or any other excused absence is the student responsibility. I would not remind the student that he/she needs to make-up any work. It is also the responsibility of the student to get the information missed the day he/she was absent. All assignments, besides homework, not made up within one week period upon returning to school will receive a zero!!
Special Projects and Assignment
Projects or written assignments will be assigned from time to time. Projects and written assignments are also expected to be turned in on time. Penalty will be given on late projects or assignments. Rubrics will be used to grade them.
Notebook
Each student is responsible for keeping a notebook. It should contain classroom policies, grade papers, written assignments and classroom notes. Open notebook pop-quiz will be given from time to time.
Classroom Policies
Student should:
1.Have all appropriate materials and supplies at your table and be seated when the bell rings.
2.Respect people, equipment and furnishing in your classroom.
3.Follow directions the first time they are given.
4.Observe all rules in the student handbook.
